Game Design

Interesting video I saw that @insomniacgames posted.

On Break!

Hey guys! I saw this on Kotaku and it brought me back when I use to play with Legos as a kid.

There was always the 3 different building items that kids use to build with when I was a kid. What was your building equipment? I personally loved Legos and always tried to work the K'Nex. I had a few Tinker Toys but I always ended up making swords/gun type items from them so I don't remember making any cool. As for Legos, oh man. The creative and love I spent into making cities/cars was a cite to see. I also had one of the giant containers that had a mix of everything along with many different builds (ranging from Aliens to Robin Hood). If you don't remember any of what I stated, maybe the pictures below might spark a memory or two!

Eye pet looks so adorable!

Sony hit my sweet spot for these virtual pets. It looks like some casual fun!

Fat Princess comes on the 30th!

2 days! 2 more days till Fat Princess comes out. Watching all the gameplay videos reminds me of a old Playstation 1 game called "Team Buddies". I was chating with my buddy Greg a couple days ago at school, we both came to a conclusion. This generation's arcade games have created more excitement for us than some of our "Hardcore" title picks. Especially on the PSN network with innovative titles like Pixel Junk Monsters, Warhawk, Flower, Rag Doll Kung Fu(A major upgrade from the original PC title) and the upcoming Fat Princess. Also, can't forget titles like Castle Crashers and Splosion Man(I might have spelt this wrong). What these titles provide is a bit of a break from the causal shooter or action genre.

Fat Princess interview from the Playstation Blog

Thursday, July 16, 2009

I'm back!

Hey everyone! Sorry for the leap of absence from the blogging community!

The question I've been asking myself ever since the Playstation 3 was first released so long ago *remembers the PS3 lines to find out that the store you waited at only had like 3 PS3s. ahh the memories!* is what the heck is up with the R2 and L2 buttons. I know that they were going to perfect for certain games but I didn't know which ones. As I opened up my box of random games, I found my copy of Twisted Metal 4. Popping it into my PS3, I soon realized that the R2 and L2 buttons were made perfect for this game! The feel of pressing the triggers to shoot my misles and machine gun bullets was so satisfying.

The thing I basically wanted to ask was, hey Sony, where's my Twisted Metal 6? WHERE!?

E3 After thoughts!

Well, I believe we are on a brink on seeing something new and fresh! After seeing both the Xbox 360 and PS3 new motion devices, I am super stoked to see more! The body motion sensor with the Xbox 360 (I assume it's done through a camera or something) was quite interesting. It reminds me of an enhanced Eye Toy. What really got me was what what Mr. Peter Molyneux. It struck me how much we've evolved from the days of "Pong". If you haven't seen it yet, here you go!

As for the PS3, I'm so excited for that new motion sensor. I feel that it hits my weakness that I had for the Wii when it was first announced. And seeing as they've been testing out the technology behind this video.

I can only imagine what they can do with it.

Here's what they showed at the PS3 Conference.

The whole idea of having the ability to interact with those objects with that kind of precision is amazing. The ever so dying area of rail gun shooters could be revived so easily with this controller alone. Think of the graphical power of the PS3 mixed with Wii motion sensored games. Everyone wants Wii-HD, well PS3 kind of beat it there!

Oh the last note I would like to talk about is Left 4 Dead 2. Really Valve? Really? A year after the first one is released, you create another one. I don't know how I feel yet but seeing as I might have to chip out another 40 dollars for only 5 campaigns. I might have to wait for the "Steam Deals". Don't get me wrong, it looks interesting and fun but I thought that since I bought L4D 1, that it would at least last 2 years. They better add the new infected to the original L4D campaigns! The new concept for the "Charger" seems very needed and I am wondering if they'll add any new infected that resembles the "Screamer" from the developer commentary. I also love the idea of the witch walking around in daylight!

Those are just some thoughts! I hope everyone is pumped for the upcoming games of 2009/2010!

Oh ya, Uncharted 2 looks outstanding. The part where the helicopter is shooting inside the building and the lights are moving with shadows of the items on the floor = incredible!

On my summer break!

Hey hey, I'm off on my summer break and it's been such a needed relaxing period. I went swimming / hot tubing yesterday and it felt so chill. I woke up today to check out some more information on the game "inFamous". Found some sweet dev. diary videos on Game Trailers. Videos like these remind me of when I first started out wanting to make games and why. Just the thrill to make "fun" games. The video also has some an awesome intro. Check it out.

Rag Doll Kung Fu Rocks!

I didn't think I was gonna love Rag Doll Kun Fu: Fists of Plastic but it's turning out to be great fun! Think of Super Smash with puppets that also uses the motion sensor intuitively. I am digging the motion sensor lightning ball charge up and super punch (w/e punch that propels you at the enemy). Check out the game play video I left below! Don't under estimate how fun this game is! And it's also free for this week only (I think?) so what are you waiting for?

Summer!

School ends in like a week! I've been busy finishing final projects and such! I did managed to find my way over to Game Trailers and see the Uncharted 2 gameplay. Oh wow! The animation of everything is so fluid and nice! It really brings a new level of detail to video games! Check it out!

Coke Ads

As I was watching House on Hulu, I saw this fantastic ad for Coke Cola. Now, as a Coke addict, I love seeing anything Coke related. I like how the commercial plays with the feeling of normalness of life with Coke at hand. And without Coke, the world ceases to remain functional. Great idea, and great drink!

Updated my side stuff!

I thought today would be a good day to update all the sidebar columns (most of them at least). I also got to take a chance to watch the latest episode in Game Trailer's Bonus Round. It was quite interesting to hear everyone's thoughts on "On Live". You know what, here. Just watch it here

Sonic Unreal!

I got to play the Titan expansion pack to Unreal Tournament recently. I thought it was pretty sweet. The tide of the battle really changes when you are able to use the Titan mutator (which makes you a 15 foot character with a Gatling shock rifle and missile launcher).

Here's a quick synopsis of it.

But what really caught my eye was a user mod that combined the Unreal 2D mod and a custom made level of sonic. Ya, I know, Awesome right? Check it out here!

The game demo site File Front will be no more as of March 30th! I always used this site for anything file related that dealt with video games, and I will sorely miss you!

GDC kicks off and I'm already excited for the future!

Well, I'm not going to say I thought of this idea up before (I did) but I thought the idea of playing video games from a stream sort was crazy! Plus at the time, the internet connections weren't as powerful as they are today. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's something called "On Live". I think these videos do a better explaining it!

I'm really excited for developers because the ideas for this is endless. The whole spectating games aspect to this service is what has me going! Games like Counter-Strike have utilities such as HLTV for spectating but even with that, the amount of players viewing can only be about 2000 player. This is something that Video Game tournaments needed! On top of that, I'm really excited to see how developers interact with their communities. I see many "play against the developer" games about to spring up! I hope to also see many new innovative ideas come out since it looks like the developers get to choose their games price point. This will be a good thing with the economy it is at the moment.

With that said, here are some downsides to if this platform does take off. Did everyone forget how Nvidia and ATI are going to feel about this? Sure, the PC's that are running this service need to be beast machines but then the option to buy and upgrade personal computers becomes less attractive. Like, would you rather buy a lower pc and play Crysis on ON Live or upgrade the crap out of your home pc rig and play it from their. With money as an issue, I can see people going the On Live route (depending the pricing of the whole service + the game). Also, it's mentioned that you can max out all the settings on Crysis Warhead and play it from your computer. What happens when your game crashes on a computer half way around the world? I mean, if your computer crashes now, all you have to do is hit the restart and it reboots up. I'd like to hear how they're dealing with that problem. Also, they stated that colleges can use this service? Ha! College net isn't the greatest and I doubt it could handle the HD viewing that people are use to!

Here's to hoping for the best for this new platform! Here's to all the desk jobs that use this service and get nothing productive done!

EDIT:Here's a picture of what the platform will look like with the TV plug in and controller!

New Havok AI SDK demo

Found this to be a cool demo for the new Havok AI SDK. Food's done, gotta go!

EDIT: More!

Nazi Zombies are the shit!

They are awesome and this trailer justifies how the Zombie mode in Call of Duty 5 needs its own game. Note:This is from the new map pack that just came out!

What's in the box!

What's in it?

EDITAccording to Gamespy the video isn't anything offical from Valve. It was made by fans of the series Half Life (The community behind Valve games is amazing!!!!). Which leads me to my next thought, where's Half Life Episode 3? Also, what are they packaging in it this time? Counter-Strike 2.0? Where is that new information Gabe Newell?

NICE KICKS!

I saw these puppies on Kotaku and they look so baddass! I doubt I'd be caught wearing them due to the whole purple laces (come on, where on the Playstation brand do you see that much purple?). Anyways, just wanted to drop something on the blog!

New South Park tonight! Hope it's better than the season opener!

EDIT: That South Park was a major let down! Well, it wasn't horrible but it wasn't the greatness I wanted. You know what was the greatness that I loved. This Resident Evil 5 Zombie clip from IGN!

After weekend of Resident Evil 5...

As you might know, Resident Evil 5 came out Friday the 13th and we beat it Saturday night! (Yes, we played nonstop!). Here are some thoughts about it. The bad? It seems a lot more toned down. I mean the violent death animations that I loved in Resident Evil 4 are no where to be seen in Resident Evil 5! I even sometimes died in RE4, just to see the death animation. THEY WERE THAT GOOD! That plus there aren't a lot of impossible moments in the game that really pushed the coop portion! The single player felt way too easy (we played with another person!) and it's a shame! With all the upgrades you can get, it's a shame the game didn't ramp up the difficulty. This is clearly seen with some of the bosses! Now, for the good! It's a really fun experience that will definitely make you yell at your teammate! The combo system which basically means, you can hit a body part of a enemy than both Sheva and Chris can do a melee move, is outstanding. You'll definitely get a kick when you versus the first chainsaw enemy (shown below) and both characters kick him around like he was a cardboard box.

"Chainsaws and zombies go together like peanut butter and jelly!"

The other great part is that the game gives you a ending! The ending isn't the greatest but at least they tie up some loose ends! If your real into the story, the game gives you documents all around the levels which can satisfy the hardcore RE fanbase! The next thing that I loved about the game was playing mercenaries with a buddy! You do start off pretty weak but once you unlock new levels / characters, you can basically tank every enemy the game has to throw to you! That doesn't mean your invisible because the game makes sure there is always something behind you.

"Having a teammate with you will definitely help when dealing with enemies surrounding you!"

Final Thoughts:
PROS:The game is an outstanding experience that is meant to be played with a friend. The intel found will please the hardcore RE fanbase. Mercenaries mode stays fresh by having Co-op also in it! Nothing beats taking out 3 chain saw guys with a buddy!
CONS:Way to easy single player may turn off some Resident Evil 4 players. The bosses aren't too rememberable cept for the Wesker! Death animations feel weak compared to Resident Evil 4's death animations.

I feel bad by referring this game back to it's older predecessor RE4 but that's what the main bugs of the RE5 is(at least for me). It's an awesome game that will probally compete for game of the year!

Gaming trends

First thing I'd like to say is that the new Facebook look is quite obnoxious! The home page has so much coming at the user and it's a little overwhelming. The idea that you can now see everything that anyone says to a friend is a interesting feature. The new [>] arrow feature instead of saying "Mikee has wrote:" is another feature I don't understand. It is the first day of using the new look but these are all my first impressions.

Now for my main rant/debate that has been in my head. It's Friday the 13th today and you know what that means. Bad luck! and Resident Evil 5 comes out today! The main hook of the game is that it's a Resident Evil game with Co-op done right! In about 20 minutes or so, I'll be playing it so I'll post some impressions of it! But to my rant. When I use to game back on the Sega Gensis or even on Windows 95 era, it was all single player centered games. Granted, there were others but for the most part, it was all about the single player experience. Soon later, the multiplayer age rolled into effect. Games like Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six, Mech Warrior 4:Vengence (MSN gaming zone!) and many others came to play. Here we are in the later years of the good ol' 2000's and we're going into the co-op game trend. My question is this, what's next? What will be the biggest improvement on? Will it be the game to site networking? Games like Killzone 2, Halo 3, Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2 all lead back to a online account on a website. Where you can track kills, talk on forums and much more. Will this become more mainstream? Will the feature of split screen multiplayer ever come back? Just think of what you think of when you think of Multiplayer? Ask me when I was in middle school, and I would have been Counter-Strike or Nightfire splitscren on the PS2.

PS2's game cover for the game Nightfire

It's what I love about this type of industry. The idea that how rapidly the times have changed for gaming and what features we all know / love.

/end rant

EDIT: This video helps remind me of the split screen multiplayer of James Bond:Nightfire!

Transformers 2 Trailer!

Watch this in the HD quality (hit play and then at the bottom right, there should be a icon named "HD". Hit it!) and be prepared to be awed! I am a big fan of the first one and big fan of Michael Bay's movies (Friday the 13th, YES!) and this just shouts out "BIGGER, BETTER, AND MORE EPIC"! I love the first one and the CG they had for it! Just viewing the trailer, I can tell the CG even looks smoother than before! I can't wait, you'll see me there opening night!

Left 4 Dead DLC!

Sometimes, you just stumble back to your old favorite sites and find something real juicy! That's what happened to me when I glanced over IGN.com. I saw a title hinting on explaining the Left 4 Dead DLC and was like (o_O)! After reading the whole thing (click here for the whole article) I basically became super happy! Along with making the 2 co-op maps competitive (they stated this before that we would do this so I wasn't to excited), they are adding a whole new mode called Survival. You basically just try and hold your ground or run around for ammo/medkits for as long as you can. There is a time counter that clocks in how long you've been on. Here's a quick glimpse of it:

The challenge? More than one of each special zombie type can come at you! So think like 2 tanks chasing you down! Sounds like a challenge? You betcha!

What I find interesting is how different the vibe you get from this zombie game. The whole screen shouts chaos and panic but in a sense of order (if this makes any sense). On top of all this, the Valve designers (according to IGN) have made it to the 10 minute mark! Definitly check out more coverage at IGN.com!

Killzone 2 baby!

I picked up Killzone 2 recently and have been addicted to the multiplayer! Let's talk about things that were amazing. The mech suit in the single player is amazing. It reminds me of the days I use to play Mech Warrior 4 Vengeance! It's that satisfying! Killzone 2 is also not the first game to feature class base teams or the whole Warzone mode (you play through all 5 modes online in one game session) but it does it so well! The controls are well...you either love em or hate em. They feel as if the weapons, the movement of the character all have this "weight" that isn't as quick as other shooters (Call of Duty 4, I'm looking at you!). It really isn't that bad because the game isn't suppose to be one man army charging in. It plays as a tactical shooter without all the commanding of other players! Now, let's talk about the bad. The multiplayer unlock system is ridiculous! I won't say I'm the best player at this game but I am quite sure that new players may be turned off at the high learning curve to the online. Other than that, I think that the game is amazing! It really did live up to the footage shown at the E3 showing so long ago! Let's take a look at that!

Note: I know that you can't be able to judge from Youtube footage but it's what I'm comparing to!

Inspire.

Back in my first semester of college, my Photoshop teacher talked to me about inspiration. Where we get it, and how it can help with developing ideas. I just watched a TED speech on the Jill Taylor's stroke. I think it's definitely inspiring and amazing to watch. Do watch it!

Oh Zuma!

The Zuma demo came out for PSN today. A perfect example of a simple concept but with a brilliant design. If you've never played, it's bubble shooter but instead of the multi-colored balls going straight down, they wrap around you.

The game also has a perfect pacing that introduces new challenges later on. You'll be challenge from tunnels which you can't fire into and multiple waves of colored balls. Maybe I'm a little clouded by the addictiveness the game has to offer but that aside, I don't I've played anything recently that has gotten me to the same addiction as this game (run on sentence, I knowz).

Edit:

Side note, found this on GT. It shows some of the mo-cap in Resident Evil 5 was done. Looked interesting enough to post. Enjoy!

BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM

In my new year's resolution, I stated that I was out to search for a Pownce substitute. I think that this blog/facebook has filled the gap. If you've never heard of Pownce, it was a micro blog website that competed against Twitter (even if it didn't try to). It was a close circle of people that sent each other links and pictures. On this blog of mine, I've posted countless videos/links to things I find interesting. That takes care of the links/pictures that I use to post on Pownce and then I also blog on here. As for a social network that I reach out to, I fiddle around on Facebook. Together, the two fill my need of Pownce. What I'm trying to say is that I found a cool Left 4 Dead parody from GameTrailers. Check it out!

Happy Vday. God of War 3

Happy Valentines weekend to all!

Wanted to drop this by everyone. It's the epic God of War 3 trailer!
Was David Jaffe talking shit when he said
"a- HOLY HOLY HOLY FUCKING HELL!
b- I thought GEARS OF WARS 2 looked about as good as a next-gen game could look... and that game is currently- and will probably remain- my game of the year. And hell, I think I actually get to vote on that kind of stuff in some circles :) And unless I get blown away by POP or something else I missed, GEARS 2 is the SHIT... this year. Dudes and dudettes, fucking WAIT till you see the amazing graphics... just fucking wait. And yes, Xbots, accuse me all you want of being a Sony fanboy. Just remember two things:

#1- I just said GEARS 2 is the BEST fucking playing and looking game of the year... better than any PS3 game. And there are some damn good PS3 games, I feel.

#2- FUCK YOU! I ain't no fan boy but this mother fucking game looks like nothing you've ever played... and you can hold me to that when this thing hits and when they start showing gameplay footage. It looks like a painting come to life- it's THAT good looking.

David"

Up to you to decide! I think the begining sequence was AMAZING! Just download the video and look at the details put on the textures on the crow and on the environment. It's so pretty! The other thing I loved about the trailer was the voice of Kratos. It helps bring out a feeling of epic-ness to the viewer. Man, first time I watched it, I basically said "Oh SHIT!". Well enough of my rant, enjoy you guys! To download, go to gametrailers.com and download the HD version.

-Mikee

Edit:

Here's a designer interview on God Of War 3!

Looks like this is the last God of War! If it's anywhere near as epic as Metal Gear Solid 4 was, I won't have any doubts! Definitely check it out!

Half Life the mini series

I was on the Joystiq and found this gem. Just released from the Purchase brothers, here is the Half Life Mini Series! It's a little NFSW so do use caution but overall, it's pretty badass!

Killzone 2 is a month away

I'm watching videos of Killzone 2 and am really hyped by it! I don't know what I was more pumped for. Metal Gear Solid 4 or Killzone 2? Solid Snake brings up old memories but Killzone has a place my gamer heart. But what ever, these gameplay videos look sick!

FEAR 2 Level Design.

I haven't posted on here in a while because it's been hectic! Two things I just want to point out,

1. I will be playing the RE5 demo tomorrow at my friend Dean's house
2. Hell YES! to #1.

It looks amazing and my buddy sent me a text today saying, "RE5 is hard". Haha. I remember playing Resident Evil 4 and entering the first town, I was just like, "damn, this game is hard." Does anyone else remember how hard the first town was? And how hard the first chainsaw guy was!? I wonder if they nuked the characters to hit a younger audience. I really hope they don't! The difficulty of the game was what made it interesting. Well, until you picked up better weapons later on. Then you just rolled every zombie like you were playing Left 4 Dead.

Besides this, I'm really excited for FEAR 2. The demo had some problems (I played the PS3 version) like frame rate issues and the controls were "clunky". By clunky, I mean that any FPS developer should not! I mean NEVER assign the R2 and L2 buttons as shoot! It just doesn't work the same way it does on the Xbox 360. That and get rid of the whole glowing enemies. That just takes away from the realism the game is trying to achieve. I'm just nit picking because the game looks good. After seeing this video from IGN, I'm back to "really excited" for the game again. Check this out!

RE5!!!!!!

OMG, a Resident Evil game that you get to duke it out with Wesker? I'm all in! 2009 Gaming is looking so fucking good! Sony has a terrific line up coming up! (Heavy Rain, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, GOW3, RE5, Prototype). I know that some of those are multiplication but still!

Infamous looks awesome!

The animations look so fluid on the Infamous! The game itself is turning out to look like a hot seller in 2009. The only concern I have is the enemy differences in design. Frankly, there is none. They all seem to wear this red cloak and fight against the protagonist. I hope there more variations and some that take advantage that your powers are only electricity (i.e. a water enemy that runs at you to hold you and fry your powers. Leaving you only to use melee or to maneuver around the enemy till your powers come back!). I'm sure that the developers of Sly Cooper will create a masterpiece! Here's a sweet video from CES from them.

Really interesting read about Left 4 Dead

Read this [ Link ]

I think it's amazing how play testing and general game design help create the game we all love(at least I really do!) today. The thing I love the most about Left 4 Dead is the clear idea of where your suppose to go! My Counter-strike team decided to just run through the level. Who ever got knocked down became a pipe bomb! I don't memorize the levels in L4D and running through, I had a clear, precise knowledge of where to go! That's what makes the game so enjoyable. The lack of frustration (unless your playing on Expert). Check out the differences in screenshots!

Early Version of L4D:

Later Version:

For more information go to the link above!

Edit:
While playing today, I found a sweet server which tracked what achievements you could/not do still. One example is that we shot each other already (which angered me cause I was going for that achievement) so we couldn't get the achievement for "Completing a campaign without a person taking any friendly fire damage". I also saw the Hulk in the server. My buddies and I quickly disposed of him. Check out this pic of it!

Lars and the Real Girl

First off, Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and fun time!
Now for the my first post for the new year.

I've been meaning to watch the movie, Lars and the Real Girl. Here's the trailer!

After seeing this a while back, I thought it'd be a comedy with somewhat of a story. WAS I WRONG OR WHAT! It was actually a love story with a hint of comedy. I for one am usually one for action and horror movies but this is one hit a home run with me. I really enjoyed it! I think what sets with me was the soundtrack. There is a scene in the movie in which little words are said (I know, I know, it's bland but I'm trying not to say any spoilers). The music becomes the words of the characters on scene and it felt like it just clicked together. This is definitely one of those movies that you need to see! Hey, look at me. I'm not a fan of typical chick flicks but this movie is just too well done to pass up!
